Gongs Under the Stars: An Evening of Sound, Nature and Connection

A little reflection on a magical evening of gongs, nature and connection, as we watched the light fade, the stars appear and allowed ourselves to simply slow down and be.

Gongs Under the Stars: An Evening of Sound, Nature and Connection

There are some evenings that feel a little bit magical, and Gongs Under the Stars was definitely one of them. I’ve been reflecting on the evening since we gathered together, and on how special it felt to play the gongs outside, surrounded by the late-summer landscape.

The evening began in warm air, with a gentle breeze moving around us. Ducks were busy going about their business on the pond, occasionally flying overhead almost as if they were checking out what we were doing, while the sun found its way through the clouds every now and then.

And then, slowly, the light began to change.

As the gongs played, the evening moved from daylight into dusk, and then into darkness. The first stars appeared overhead, followed by the moon beginning to shine. And just when it felt like the evening couldn’t get much more magical, a bat appeared above us, joining us for a little while.

There was something really special about experiencing the gongs in that setting. Rather than feeling like we had simply taken the gongs outside, it felt as though they had become part of everything that was already there. The sounds of the gongs mixed with the sounds of the natural world around us. There were movements, little interruptions, changes in the air and moments of complete stillness. None of it needed to be controlled or quietened. It was simply part of the experience.

And perhaps that was one of the things I loved most about the evening. There was no need to separate ourselves from what was happening around us. We could simply be there, listening, resting and noticing as the evening unfolded.

It was also lovely to share the experience with a mixture of familiar and new faces. Some people had been to gong baths many times before, while for others this was their first experience. I always enjoy that mix - people arriving with their own reasons for being there and then sharing the same space for a while, before heading off on their own individual journeys with the gongs.

Afterwards, we gathered back in the yurt for some yummy treats, a cosy glow from the flickering fake fire, all in the name of protecting our beautiful land after the very dry summer, and a chance to share a little of our experiences before heading home. There was something lovely about that gentle transition too - from being outside under the stars, deeply immersed in the sound, to coming back together, chatting, laughing and warming up. It felt like the perfect way to end the evening as we sipped our hot herbal teas, and ate chocolate courgette muffins, peanut truffles, and strawberries.

I’m very grateful to everyone who joined me and helped make Gongs Under the Stars what it was. It reminded me once again that the gong experience isn't just about the sound itself. It’s about the space we create around it, the people we share it with, and sometimes the wonderful things that happen when we allow ourselves to slow down and simply be present.

With warmth
